Stand Alone Solar Home Lighting and LED Lamps

Dynaspede offers lighting solutions for illuminating un-electrified houses in remote areas using solar photovoltaic (PV) light. A description of this scheme and its advantages are detailed below.

Importance of the System:
Solar energy is a viable everlasting alternate source of energy which saves dwindling fossil fuel deposits, and reduces environmental pollution caused by the combustion of fossil fuels. This primary source of energy for life on earth is one of the most sought-after alternate energy sources to replace fossil fuels.

Details of the System:
Dynaspede’s system consists of a solar panel, which contains photovoltaic modules, generates electricity at 12 volts, a battery of sufficient ampere hour capacity to store the energy produced by the photovoltaic module, and a power LED embedded Light source to illuminate  the houses. The detailed specifications are as follows:

Solar Panel :
It is a collection of solar photo voltaic cells. Each cell absorbs the energy in the solar rays and converts it into electrical energy at 12 volts. The electricity produced from solar photovoltaic cells / modules is augmented in a series / parallel combination to get the correct voltage and power. Since this electricity will be used in the night hours, the energy needs to be stored in an easily retrievable mechanism. This Electrical energy will be stored in the battery.

Battery
It is a storage device for the electrical energy generated by the solar panel during the day. Its storage capacity is sufficient to meet the illumination demand for about 4 – 5 hours. The ampere hour capacity of the battery is determined by the number of lamps that need to be lit, and the duration. In this case, we have considered a battery  of 6.5AH to  run two LED lamps for 4-5 Hours.

Power LED
It is a special purpose LED exclusively used as a bulb. The attractive features of this LED are:
  1. Very High Efficiency
  2. Low Energy Consumption
  3. Very Long life cycle of 50,000 hours or more.
  4. Compact in size

The construction of these Lamps for the  cluster housing / dwellings can be either wall mounted  or  can be hung from the roof beadings. The illumination levels vary between  150-170 lumens  per lamp, for about  5 to 6 hours  in the evening. A manual ON/OFF switch is provided to switch on / off the lamps when needed, but only to the extent of the charge retention period of 5-6 hours every day.

Description and Block Diagram:
Solar cells are devices that convert solar energy directly into electricity, either by photovoltaic effect or by converting the solar energy to heat or chemical energy. The most common form of solar cells is based on the photovoltaic (PV) effect in which light falling on a two-layer semi-conductor device produces a photo voltage or potential difference between the layers. This voltage is capable of driving a current through an external circuit and thereby producing useful energy. Silicon solar cells are made using single crystal wafers, polycrystalline wafers or thin films.

Advantages of this system:

1. Advantages to the State Electricity Boards/Utility companies

  • This is OFF-GRID supply; hence there is no need to purchase/generate additional power. This will save a precious resources required by the electricity boards to do the same.
  • No need for erection and commissioning of new distribution lines to remote villages without power supply.
  • Dynaspede’s Solar energy-based illumination system is maintenance free, it is just like” fix and forget”. Life span of this system is about 15 years. It generates power without any interruption as long as there is sunlight. Only regular cleaning of the solar panel surface is required.
  • This system can’t be over loaded; one can draw the power only 4-5 hours per day to illuminate one/two LED lamps.
  • Power theft and multiplexing of connections are not possible. It is a stand alone system to fulfil the requirement of one house for 4- 5 hours. Multiplexing of connection is not easy; in that event, the duration of illumination will go down below 4 hours proportionately with the size of multiplexing.
  • Ownership and responsibility lies with the respective user only. Hence no tampering to the system.

2. Advantages to the State Governments

  • Use of kerosene can be minimized, bringing down the expenditure on kerosene subsidy.
  • End users can get the benefit without any delay.

3. Advantages to the Environment

  • In order to minimize the impact of using Fossil Fuel based Energy resources, it is desirable to encourage renewable sources of energy such as Solar Energy.
  • This is the clean power, as no green house gases are emitted.
